About Métis-Superstar Designs
The name itself came about from a brainstorming session between myself (Marlena Muir), my Mum and Aunty.
It was meant to be something lighthearted and fun, that would catch people's attention- as at the time of conception, we were discussing modern day superheroes and Indigenous peoples that inspired us on the daily.
I have always firmly believed that the stories of our people should be told in all avenues- whether that is through storytelling, written word, artwork, or clothing.
I started my business by making moss bags, ribbon skirts, and drum bags- but have since branched out into more contemporary designs through my art and bead work.
Often my designs come as dreams from the stories that were told to me by my traditional teachers, and family members. They help me create a more profound understanding of our traditional stories, and further deepen my spiritual roots.
Growing up, I was disconnected from my culture- due to the generational trauma of the residential school system, and the pressure for Métis people to be more "white passing" at the time. After connecting to my culture at the age of 14, I realised that there were many other individuals like myself who did not grow up with their culture.
This is what inspired me to begin my work, by bringing a visual element to some of our traditional stories, so those that are reconnecting, or connecting for the first time to their culture, can find something that resonates with them and inspires them to learn more about our stories.
It is my hope that my designs will help bridge the gap of cultural connection, in some small way, and showcase the beauty and diversity of Indigenous culture and story telling.
Maarsii, Ekosani, Thank You for visiting!
With love, Marlena Muir
